mind body mama: Out of Control

Right on schedule, I pulled out the Holiday Control Notebook—that bible of all things winter holiday related for my family—last night. The Halloween candy is almost gone so it’s time to get a move on with our Thanksgiving, Hannukah (a very fancy way of saying “latke-eating”), Christmas and New Year’s Plans.

I found this signed affidavit (lightly redacted) on the first page of the binder:

[Insert embarrassing pet name for Lynne Marie here] was right. Wrapping is better before Christmas eve. – especially with something good on TV or DVD and SNACKS.

Signed,

[Insert embarrassing pet name for Sweetiebabyhoneylicious here]

P.S. When I go shopping, I will bring cold hard cash. No credit or debit, dammit.

Control This

Get Tape!!!

What could it mean?

Well, I took the idea from Fly Lady (http://www.flylady.net/) to whom BirthPie referred me when she first learned that I use a timer when I do the laundry. Fly Lady badly fails the snark test, IMHO, and she never met a cliche, exclamation point or run-on sentence that she didn't love. But it is a great thing to have all my holiday menus, time-lines and to-do lists in one place. When my mother tries to argue that we don't actually need 3 10 oz. containers of Brussells Sprouts for Thanksgiving dinner I can produce documentation that proves that we do. Priceless!

Unbelievable. Is this notebook color coded, too?

I am in awe that you have written and signed proof that you were right- how on earth did you obtain that?

It's not color coded, but that's a great idea. It does have little tabbed sections and interior pockets and all that good stuff.

I think I'm fairly amazed at the written proof of rightness too. How often does that happen? That must be why I blogged this.

@Anonymous--I have no memory of obtaining that note. Which is sad because it means that I can't repeat my successful tactics the next time I'm right about something.

LMW!!

I am so hopelessly behind on comments right now. Your last few posts have been so great that in the moments that I read them, I didn't think I could sort through my thoughts well enough to post a coherent comment. But I will.

Flylady ... ug. Yes, she does have some good tips. But my big peeve with her approach is that it's not organized in a clear, user-friendly, visual-friendly way. You have to dig for everything, and who has time for that? I like Peter Walsh better. They've both given me some Aha's, though.

Also, before I forget ... Mel's doing a blogosphere wide list where everyone submits a link to their very best post from the past year. She publishes the list on or around New Year's Day. Previously, this bright little excercise of hers was limited to ALI bloggers. But this year, she's throwing it wide. It's a way to potentially introduce yourself to new readers. The list is a lot of fun, because it's a Best Of. So when you click over, your know you are reading something that is representative of work the author is proudest of.
I must say, I think you will have a hard time choosing.

Cheers,

D,

Thanks, D! I have not ignored your advice to check out Mel's site, I'm just having a little cold feet about how/when to jump in. I think this NY event could be my moment. I'll check it out. lmw

How about you just make a copy of your holiday notebook and I'll follow it, too? We all love brussel sprouts.

You've taken your father's trait of "being right" (most of the time) to new heights. Written proof! I just hope he can't find a pencil.

I'm sure she made me write that note and deposit it in the notebook. I'm sure I was complaining about staying up too late wrapping on Christmas Eve after having procrastinated and I got the big I told you so.

Oh my gosh. You are genius. I am going to try this during the upcoming holiday season. All of these things. The cash, the present wrapping...

Oh, and, Hello Neighbor! I'm in Western Mass, too! Love your work here.

You are hysterical. I love the CONTROL notebook. And the note. How perfectly perfect. Funny, the holidays bring so much freedom and grace ON THE ACTUAL holiday. But there is much control and planning needed to lead up to that day, isn't there?

I'll be thinking of this when I take out our Xmas stuff. Oh, and the cold hard cash bit...because yeah, debt due to xmas is no fun. Even when gifting is a blast!
